What is it and how does it work?
A laser beam is passed through the surface of the skin to reach the dilated capillaries and blood vessels within the birthmark causing the vessel walls to collapse and later dissolve within the body.
Does it hurt?
There may be a slight burning sensation but this is kept to a minimum by preparing the skin prior to treatment with topical anaesthetic creams.
Are there any side effects?
The tissue may appear a little paler immediately following laser application but after approximately a week the area turns black and falls off as a scab.
How long does the treatment take?
Depending on the severity of the problem, each session may take up to an hour.
How long will the effects of the treatment last?
Multiple treatments will be required at 4-6 week intervals and the overall outcome will depend on the initial severity of the mark. You will be advised on the potential outcome at your initial consultation.
What aftercare will I need?
The area(s) treated must not be exposed to sun or any heat treatments for at least two days after treatment and an effective SPF30 should be applied.
